Welcome to 2012.  You made it!  Now let’s see if the world will continue to exist or if the Aztec calendar is a portent of doom.

All kidding aside, I have a question for you.  What do you want to happen in 2012?  What do you want your business to look like?  How much do you want to do in sales next year?  Was 2011 a great year and you want to repeat its success?  Do you want more vacation time?  Do you want Jacki to come to your store for an appearance, classes and book signing?

Forget about the business plan for a second and answer for yourself what you really want out of 2012.   What you really want is what you can most easily get because that will motivate you.  What you really-really want (ok Spice Girls) will give you the energy you need to make it happen.  If you are just looking at what you “should” do, that can be a drain and not inspiring at all.

Going for what I want and having a good time doing it is what had gotten my through some of my toughest moments these past 20 years.  When business becomes drudgery it is time to shake it up and ask yourself what you really want.

Here is something scary to both you and me, when I was talking to a customer about re-orging her business I asked her what she really wanted to do with her store and life.   A few weeks later she came back with, “Spend more time with my grand kids”.  She is closing the brick and mortar store and focusing on the web store.

For Coventry’s sake, don’t choose that!

When you decide what you really want to have happen in 2012, you can reverse engineer it to happen.  If you want more vacation time, you know you will have to train quality employees.  TO get quality employees you need to hone your interviewing and HR skills.   TO afford a vacation and extra employees you need to increase your sales.  Even if you want to just close for a week or two you have in increase your sales to counter the times you are closed.    To increase your sales you need more foot traffic, more inventory and higher price points.   This is where the planning starts and you do it in baby steps and small bites.

When you decide what you want for 2012, you now know the questions to ask the experts.  You now know what stands in your way and then you can see how long it will take you to get there.

Remember, if you don’t have a goal; you will never know when you get there.

Keep selling and keep the magic flowing!
